(Washington) Several people had to receive medical treatment after the delivery of a suspicious package containing white powder to an American military base near Washington, American media announced Thursday.
Joint Base Andrews, which notably hosts the presidential plane Air Force One, confirmed in a press release sent to American media that the opening of a “suspicious” package had led to the evacuation of certain areas of the base located in Maryland.
“As a precaution, the building concerned as well as the adjacent building were evacuated,” indicates the press release relayed by the CNN channel.
“First responders on scene at Joint Base Andrews determined that there was no immediate threat,” the statement added, specifying that the investigation is ongoing.
A military spokesperson said “several individuals felt unwell” and received treatment without being hospitalized, according to the Axios news site.
A spokesperson for Joint Base Andrews did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for confirmation.
CNN, citing two anonymous sources, reports that the package contained an “unknown” white powder as well as “political propaganda,” which is currently being analyzed by investigators.
The base, located a few kilometers from the US capital, is regularly used for flights of senior government officials.
President Donald Trump landed there on Wednesday, aboard an Air Force One flight, returning from an economic forum in Florida.
