(Washington) Elon Musk, who had assured that he could reduce federal public spending by two trillion dollars, estimated Thursday that saving half as much would already be a “super result”.

Posted at 2:15 p.m.

Appointed by Donald Trump to head a commission for “governmental efficiency”, the richest man in the world had the objective of reducing the federal government’s budget by two thousand billion dollars, currently from 6,500 to 7,000 billion dollars.

“We’re going to try two thousand billion. This would be the best possible result (…). And I think that if we try to reduce by two thousand billion, we will have a good chance of reaching a thousand, ”said Elon Musk on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, in a discussion with the boss of the marketing company Stagwell , Mark Penn, broadcast live on his social network, X.

“What if we manage to reduce the budget deficit to between two trillion and a trillion, while somehow freeing the economy to achieve additional growth, while the production of goods and services grows at the same rate as the money supply , well then there will be no inflation. I think it would all be a great result,” he added.

He also explained that he had identified numerous expenditure items in which to cut, without detailing them.

“It’s like being in a room full of targets, you can close your eyes and be sure you don’t miss the mark,” he described.

In the past, he had notably envisaged “massive staff reductions in the federal bureaucracy”, however promising “decent” starting conditions.
