American justice released images from a police officer’s body camera during the arrest of Luigi Mangione in a McDonald’s in Altoona (Pennsylvania), on December 9, 2024.

The police had been informed that a customer resembled the widely publicized suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson, the boss of UnitedHealthcare, the largest American health insurer.
The two officers initially approached Mangione in a discreet tone, saying only that someone had found him “suspicious.”
Asked to produce identification, he provided a fake New Jersey driver’s license with a false name, that of Mark Rosario.
Mangione, 27, has pleaded not guilty to state and federal murder charges against him. Before a trial date is set, his lawyers are trying to prevent jurors from hearing about his alleged statements to law enforcement and the items — including a gun and a notebook — they allegedly seized from his backpack.
This evidence is essential for the prosecution. They said the 9mm pistol matched the murder weapon, that the notebook’s writings revealed Mangione’s disdain for health insurers and his intention to assassinate a CEO at an investors conference, and that he gave police the same false name used by the suspected shooter at a New York hostel days before the shooting.
He faces up to life in prison in this statewide murder case. He also faces the death penalty in another proceeding at the federal level.
