(New York) The outgoing mayor of New York, Democrat Eric Adams, announced on Sunday that he abandoned the race for his re -election to just over a month of a nearly watched election by President Donald Trump.
“Despite everything we have succeeded, I cannot continue my campaign for my re -election,” said Eric Adams, who presented himself as independent, but whose chances were very low, notably after accusations of corruption, in a video posted on X.
“I was wrongly accused because I fought for this city (…) constant media speculations on my future and the decision of the campaign financing council of retaining millions of dollars have undermined my ability to lift the funds necessary for a serious campaign,” he added.
First mayor of New York charged in the exercise of his mandate, Eric Adams, atypical political figure from the right wing of the Democratic Party, had pleaded not guilty in September 2024 of corruption and illegal campaign funding in a case involving Turkey.
The Democratic councilor assured for months that his judicial problems were due to his disagreements on immigration with the previous president Joe Biden, and made a merger with the administration of President Donald Trump.
In February, the Department of Justice ordered prosecutors to cancel its charge.
In April, Eric Adams had announced to run for a second mandate under the independent label to bypass the Democrat primary, won by Zohran Mamdani, 33, against Andrew Cuomo, 67, ex-Governor of New York.
But, for several weeks, the American media has been talking about discussions between the elected official and the Trump administration for the latter to be withdrawn in favor of Mr. Cuomo, also an independent candidate.

The outgoing mayor issued, in his video, a veiled criticism of Mr. Mamdani, ensuring: “A major change is welcome and necessary, but beware of those who claim that the answer is to destroy the very system that we have built together over the generations. It is not change, it is chaos ”.
This young New Yorker elected official, born in Uganda, campaigns on the fight against expensive life, promising better supervision of free rents, buses and crèches. He presents himself as “socialist”.
Zohran Mamdani is also opposed to Curtis Sliwa, a republican candidate, in the municipal elections of November 4.
