A motorcyclist who was traveling with a group of bikers on Saturday died after being exposed to the heat in the American West desert.
The victim, who has not been identified, died from the extreme heat while hiking with five other people through Death Valley National Park, between California and Nevada.
A second motorcyclist was taken to a Las Vegas hospital, while the others were treated at the scene for “heat stroke,” the New York Post reported Monday.
On Saturday, the mercury took a rise with temperatures reaching 49 degrees, to the point that a helicopter that was supposed to meet the bikers to transport them to the hospital could not take off due to the heat.
“We encourage visitors to choose their activities carefully, avoiding prolonged periods outside in a vehicle or air-conditioned building when temperatures are this high,” a park official said.
A heat warning has been issued by the National Weather Service to affect about 10 percent of the U.S. population, or 36 million people, according to meteorologist Bryan Jackson.
