A mother accidentally hit her 12-year-old daughter after driving her to school in Florida on Monday morning.
The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. on Aug. 12 at a school in the Sarasota neighborhood, when the mother reportedly accelerated out of the parking lot but failed to see her daughter leaning in front of her SUV to pick up an object.
“She immediately stopped when she heard her daughter screaming,” Patrolman Kenn Watson told CNN.
The teenager was rushed to hospital by helicopter and was still fighting for her life on Tuesday morning.
Mr Watson is urging caution around schools following the tragedy.
“This is a tragedy that could have absolutely been avoided if the driver had paid a little more attention to what was going on around her,” he said. “This is an accident where speed is not an issue. It just happened because someone was in a hurry.”
