The victim, who lived in Hempstead, near Massachusetts, was infected with the equine encephalitis virus (EEV).
After testing positive for VEE, he was hospitalized with a central nervous system disease that ultimately took his life, according to the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. Officials are not sure when the victim became infected.
The ministry said this is the first such case in the state since 2014, when three people contracted the disease and two died.
In New Hampshire, a horse also tested positive for VEE.
In Massachusetts, ten areas are considered critical. In this state, the epidemiologist indicated that the risk will be high until the first major frost. A park has also been closed 60 kilometers from Boston.
Let us recall that Ottawa Public Health recently recommended on the social network X that “residents protect themselves against mosquito bites in order to reduce the risk associated with Eastern equine encephalitis virus and West Nile virus.”
