Morocco launched a tender for the establishment of the first LNG reception station from the countries exporting to the Kingdom, through the port of Nador, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

This came during the 16th session of the “Energy: A Strategic Pillar for Water Security and Sustainable Development” in the city of Ouarzazate (southeast), yesterday, which lasted one day, according to a statement by the Ministry of Energy Transition.

Infrastructure development

In a speech at the conference, Minister of Energy Transition, Laila Benali, said that the Kingdom launched a tender for the development of invasive infrastructure, including the construction of the first LNG reception station in Nador Port (northeast).

The minister did not mention details about the tender, while she went on to talk about the project.

She explained that the Kingdom will construct a gas pipeline network to connect this station to the European Maghreb gas pipeline (linking Morocco and Europe). She pointed out that the existing and future electrical stations of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (Government), and the industrial areas in the cities of Quneitra and Muhammadiyah (west) with liquefied natural gas. “

It also stated that the station will also be linked to the future liquefied gas stations on the Atlantic façade, and to the African Atlantic gas pipeline (under study to connect Morocco to the Nigeria) through the port of Dakhla in the disputed desert region.

Energy, water and food security

Benali stressed the importance of integration between energy, water and food security, in light of the global geopolitical context and the escalating environmental pressures.

It is expected that the needs of Morocco from natural gas will rise to 8 billion cubic meters in 2027, up from one billion cubic meters currently, according to the ministry’s estimate earlier.

The Kingdom seeks to secure its energy needs, especially as it imports 96% of it, in conjunction with high prices due to international tensions.

It works to invest more in renewable energies, as well as hold partnerships within the framework of green hydrogen, as it is among the 5 largest Arab countries as solar energy.
