A federal agent shot a person in the leg in Minneapolis after he was attacked with a shovel and broomstick while trying to make an arrest Wednesday, federal officials said.

The shooting occurred about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) north of where an immigration officer fatally shot Renee Good on Jan. 7.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement posted on social media platform X that federal agents arrested a person from Venezuela who was in the United States illegally. The person fled in a car and crashed into a parked car before fleeing on foot, DHS said.
After officers caught up with the person, two other people arrived from a nearby apartment and all three began attacking the officer, according to DHS.
“Fearing for his life and safety while being ambushed by three individuals, the agent fired a defensive shot to protect himself,” DHS said.
The two people who left the apartment are in custody, he added.
A large group of officers wearing gas masks fired tear gas into a crowd gathered at an intersection in north Minneapolis, near where Wednesday’s shooting took place.
