A senior Syrian official said that the new administration appointed the former deputy governor of the bank, Maysaa Sabreen, to the position of governor of the Central Bank of Syria.
Thus, Sabreen becomes the first woman to assume leadership of the institution in its history extending for more than 70 years, replacing Muhammad Issam Hazma, who was appointed by ousted President Bashar al-Assad as governor of the Central Bank in 2021.
Career progression
According to Syria TV, Maysaa Sabreen began her career as First Deputy Governor of the Bank since November 2020, and has more than 15 years of professional experience in the financial and banking field.
She obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Damascus, in addition to a chartered accountant’s certificate, which qualified her to assume prominent leadership positions. She held the position of director of the Directorate of the Government Commission for Banks, and was a member of the board of directors of the Damascus Stock Exchange, before assuming her last position.
