(Fall River) Nine people have lost their lives in the fire of a residence for the elderly in the Massachusetts, whose residents hung on the windows to call for help, the authorities said on Monday. At least 30 people were injured.
The firefighters intervened at the Gabriel House residence in Fall River around 9:50 p.m. Sunday and were greeted by thick smoke and flames at the front of the building, with occupants trapped inside, the department of state fire services said in a press release. About 70 people live in this house.
The fire was extinguished on Monday morning and the firefighters were able to enter the building and rescue many occupants. About fifty firefighters intervened, including about thirty who was not in service.
Many rescued people have been transported to local and regional hospitals in variable states. Five firefighters were injured, but their injuries do not put their lives in danger, according to the statement.
“It is an unimaginable tragedy for the families concerned and the community of Fall River,” said chef Jeffrey Bacon.

He told journalists that “several people leaned over the windows waiting to be rescued”. Family members who showed up said the police were trying to break the windows.
The police department of Fall River said in a statement that “without hesitation”, the agents entered the smoky building, broke the doors and escorted the residents to a safe place.
“A dozen non -ambulatory residents were physically transported by our agents. Their courage and speed of action have undoubtedly saved many lives, ”it was assured.
The origin and cause of the fire are the subject of an investigation, said local and national authorities.
Fall River, which has approximately 94,000 inhabitants, is located about 32 kilometers southeast of Providence, Rhode Island.
