A man was shot and killed on the New York subway after stepping between passengers to break up an argument, police and local media said Monday.
The victim, 45-year-old Richard Henderson, was shot in the back and shoulder before being transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said in a statement.
While returning home by subway on Sunday evening, Mr. Henderson was shot after stepping between two passengers arguing on the subway train over loud music, according to local media.
Police said they had not arrested any suspects at this stage.
The man, married, father of three children and grandfather of two grandchildren, had spent the evening watching an American football match with a friend, according to CBS, citing his brother.
This homicide is the latest example of harmless altercations turning into tragedy in the United States, which has more guns than people.
The country has the highest gun death rate of any developed country.
