“The fires are still raging in Los Angeles. Incompetent politicians have no idea how to turn them off,” the future Republican president said in a message posted on his Truth Social platform.

“This is one of the worst disasters in the history of our country. They can’t put out the fires. What’s wrong with them? “, he wrote.

“I look forward to him coming here,” California Governor Gavin Newsom replied in an interview on NBC on Sunday.

For several days, Mr. Newsom, considered one of the hopes of the Democratic Party, has called on Donald Trump to go to Los Angeles to see for himself the damage and the efforts put in place to put out the fires.

The Republican called on the governor to resign and spread false information this week, including claims that California is running out of water because of Democratic environmental policies that would divert rainwater to protect “useless fish.” .

In fact, most of the water used by Los Angeles comes from the Colorado River, and is used primarily by the agricultural sector.

“I don’t think this false information is helping us. If I responded to Donald Trump’s insults, which I am accustomed to, it would take me months,” Gavin Newsom said on Sunday.

The speed and intensity of the fires have tested firefighting infrastructure and sparked questions and criticism about the state’s preparedness.

Fire hydrants have dried up in the upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood, ravaged by one of the area’s multiple fires, while water shortages have also hampered efforts elsewhere.

The fires have so far destroyed more than 12,000 structures and killed at least 16 people, according to authorities on Saturday. They continue to gain ground on Sunday and could strengthen in the coming hours, with the anticipated return of violent winds.
