Tomatoes, cats, tomatoes, or stretching, different names for a fruit that some like to describe as “crazy” to fluctuate their price is very volatile, and it is gained special importance in the month of Ramadan because of its multiple uses in cooking the main meals or to prepare the sauces and salads that spread in the holy month tables.

facts

Utta State University published what he described as exciting facts about tomatoes:

  • In the past, people avoided tomatoes and considered them poisoned for belonging to the eggplant family that contains some highly toxic crops, but starting from the 18th century AD, tomatoes began to gain popularity and were widely accepted as a delicious and safe addition to food dishes.
  • According to the Guinness Book of Records, the heavier tomato fruit weighs 8.61 pounds.
  • Fruit or vegetables? Scientifically, tomatoes are classified as a fruit as it is produced from the flower ovaries, and it contains seeds, but in 1893, the US Supreme Court issued a ruling classifying tomatoes as vegetables for reasons related to customs tariffs.
  • It is believed that the name of tomatoes is derived from the language of Aztec (ancient civilization in Central America) Tomatl, and when it was discovered by Spanish travelers in the 16th century AD, they brought it to Europe.
  • Tomatoes are rich in antioxidants, especially lycopene, and are associated with many health benefits, as it reduces the risk of certain diseases, especially heart diseases and some types of cancer.
  • According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAOThe United Nations, the tomato crop grows in a period ranging from 90 to 150 days, and grows at the average temperature between 18 to 25 degrees Celsius during the day, and between 10 to 20 degrees at night.
  • Repeated light irrigation improves the volume of the fruit, its shape, throat and color, but in return it reduces the total solid materials (dry material content) and acid content.
  • The low solid materials reduces the quality of the fruit, and when choosing irrigation practices, the type of final product must be taken into account, as a long water shortage leads to cracking of the fruits.
