Le Monde newspaper said that tens of thousands of people have joined Facebook groups in Sweden and Denmark, demanding the boycott of American products and services, while the Norwegian Halbak Bonkers announced that it will stop providing US military ships with fuel.
The newspaper pointed out – in a report written by Ann Francois Heifert – that these calls came as a reaction to the policies of the US administration led by President Donald Trump, and the participants hope to influence the American markets to support Ukraine politically and economically in its conflict with Russia.
The President of Halbak Bonkers, Gonar Gran defended his decision, describing him as “moral”, and indicated that his company has stopped supplying Russian ships since the beginning of the conquest of Ukraine, and explained that “the United States today is excluded because of its behavior towards the Ukrainians,” stressing that “one liter will not be delivered to the American military ships until Trump leaves power.”
However, the Norwegian Defense Minister Tori Sandfik responded to the company’s decision that it “does not correspond to the government’s policy,” and said that “the American forces will continue to receive the supplies and support they need from Norway.”
Although this advertisement appears to be extreme – according to the newspaper – it is only one of other advertisements in northern Europe, where the movement calling for boycotting American brands is gaining momentum in recent weeks, although it is still difficult to assess the impact of this procedure.
The Danish “US boycott” group was established on February 3, and on March 3, more than 32,000 people joined a similar group in Sweden, and those in charge of it said that it was “born from frustration” from the world “that has become more mysterious and unpredictable since January 20”, the date of Trump’s inauguration.
A firm practice
A number of participants in the district published the work they did, and one of them said, “I stopped buying food products from American companies, such as Heinz and Glags and Snickers. I changed my search engine from Google to Ihusia, and I canceled my subscription in Netflix,” and others said, “I will review my financial investments”, and others expressed their remorse for their need to use Facebook to trade.
Hobby Andersen, one of the group’s members, said that the boycott is a solid practice in Sweden, and he mentioned the measures taken against French products in the early 1990s to protest nuclear tests in the Pacific Ocean, and said that “the purchase of American products in our time is equivalent to supporting Russia’s attempts to crush its European brother.”
“By boycotting American products, they can put some papers in the hands of Ukrainian President Volodimir Zellinski,” said Jacob Zolinski, a Swedish dentist, adding that “Trump will realize that dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin does not deserve all this.”
Although it is difficult to measure the impact of such initiatives, the Sling Group, the leading distribution of food in Denmark, has responded, changed stickers in its major stores, and put a black star alongside the price, indicating that the European producer, leaving customers the choice between the products that they offer from all over the world, said its manager.
