Some Republicans distanced themselves from Donald Trump’s remarks after he hurled insults about the mental state of his Democratic rival Kamala Harris at a rally in Wisconsin on Saturday night, where he said she was ” mentally deficient”.
The former American president also reiterated his insults against Kamala Harris on Sunday during a second rally in Erie, Pennsylvania.
“Joe Biden has become mentally deficient,” he said. It’s sad, but honestly, I think Kamala Harris was born that way.”
He notably accused the vice-president of being responsible for illegal immigration under the administration of Joe Biden, specifying that “only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country”.
Donald Trump’s remarks provoked a reaction from some Republicans, who urged him to focus on the issues at home, instead of attacking his rival, according to what CNN reports.
“Here’s what I would say to President Trump: When people look at the state of affairs, they trust you on the economy, the border, inflation and foreign policy by broad marks. Focus on these,” said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
Trump’s top ally also told CNN he doesn’t believe Kamala Harris is “mentally deficient” but more “crazy liberal.”
Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican elected to the United States House of Representatives, stressed to ABC that Donald Trump should “stick to the issues.”
Former Maryland Republican Governor Larry Hogan criticized Trump’s remarks to CBS, noting that his comments were “insulting not only to the vice president, but also to people who actually have mental disabilities.”
“Trump’s divisive rhetoric is something we can do without,” he continued.
