While the atmosphere at the Democratic Convention was electric and the ratings were higher than those at the Republican Convention, make no mistake! The fight remains particularly close.
Democratic advantage
Conventions must first and foremost mobilize supporters. It must be demonstrated, in the best cases, that the political party is united and that ranks are closed to support the champion.
All this is accompanied by syrupy messages and emotions, feigned or real, which aim to push voters to the polling stations. In this regard, it is a success on both sides, even if the tone and the message were diametrically opposed.
Where I concede an advantage to the Democrats is that they have done more and better to reach other voters, those who will make the difference. We have erased almost all the more progressive references, those that the adversaries present as “communist” or “woke”. We will lead the fight more to the center.
Support for troops and veterans, solidarity, patriotism, mutual aid, protection of democracy at home and around the world, refusal to go backwards, positive thinking, respect for individual rights or freedom of choice are not particularly revolutionary.
Whether the message is delivered by a rural white sexagenarian, Tim Walz, or a black woman from California, Kamala Harris, we reach everyone and promote inclusion. The Obamas’ message served up in a Kamala Harris way.
Harris hammered home her message of unity, speaking like an attorney general before a judge: “Kamala Harris, for the People.”
Future polls should point to a steady rise for Kamala Harris. While she cannot hope for a comfortable lead, she can expect to maintain the pace of recent weeks.
The content test
While Democratic enthusiasm is running high and the convention originally planned to crown Joe Biden has been brilliantly redirected, conservative media have raised legitimate questions. New York Post headlined Friday morning: “No plan Kam.” Kamala Harris has no content.
The next hurdle in the 110-meter hurdles is the media test. Harris must now explain herself to audiences who are not won over. How will she carry out a plan that has been presented so superficially so far?
Then comes the debate test. In light of what we heard Thursday night, Harris seems more free, energetic and confident than she has been since I started following her. Trump will not be able to count on a collapse comparable to Biden’s in June.
