A drunk driver reportedly hit at least nine people, killing three of them, Thursday night during a July 4 party on New York’s Lower East Side.
Several families were in Corlears Hook Park when the driver of a speeding Ford F-150 reportedly crossed the intersection of Water and Jackson streets before ploughing into the green space and crashing into the crowd.
The deaths of at least two victims, including a 41-year-old woman and mother of two children, were confirmed on the scene by first responders, while a third victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Among the other victims transported to hospital, three were still in serious condition, according to hospital sources, quoted by the New York media, specifying that two injured children were out of danger.
“We’ve lived here for 20 years. There’s a stop sign and the construction barricades are bright orange. It’s dark, yes, but you can see these structures. The stop sign was there,” said a woman who witnessed the accident.
New York police, who opened an investigation into the incident, did not identify the driver of the vehicle who was taken into custody, saying only that he was a man from the Bronx.
