This moment, which the American leader probably intended to be light-hearted or humorous, also took place in a fire station in Shanksville, the Pennsylvania town where United Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001.
Joe Biden visited the barracks, 23 years to the day after the attacks, to advocate for national unity, explained Andrew Bates, White House spokesman.
“In a friendly manner, he offered a cap to a Trump supporter who then told him that, in the same spirit, the president should wear his Trump cap. He wore it briefly,” the spokesperson tried to justify.
The video sequence, which has taken social media by storm, shows Mr. Biden, all smiles, covering a cap he is already wearing with this Trump cap that has just been handed to him.
Republicans immediately exploited this image of the President of the United States wearing the distinctive emblem of the Trumpists.
“Thanks for the support, Joe!” Donald Trump’s campaign posted ironically on X.
Joe Biden’s gesture came the day after the debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
“Kamala Harris was so bad in the debate last night that Joe Biden just put on a Trump hat,” the Republican’s campaign team also wrote.
