On Monday, the White House launched an appeal to Congress: we have almost no more money for Ukraine and we risk handicapping our ally.
Zelensky and Ukraine weakened
In recent weeks, the Russian invasion in Ukraine has been less in the news, with Western media first focusing the spotlight on the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Not long ago, however, we highlighted the communicative talents of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Finding the right words and the right tone each time, Zelensky knew how to retain the sympathy of the Western world.
On Tuesday, the Ukrainian was forced to abandon a secret video meeting with US senators. This is unfortunate since they are divided over the sums requested by the White House, in particular the amount of 61 billion envisaged for Ukraine.
Vladimir Putin advanced on 1er December that its troops are progressing on the ground, but more specifically in the suburbs of Donetsk. This map from the Institute for the Study of War seems to confirm his claims.
If, in addition to being excluded from the media, Ukraine had to be abandoned by its partners, the most important being the United States, it could well be that the patience of Vladimir Putin would bear fruit, he who was banking on the weariness of Western public opinion.
Applications stuck at the southern border
I’ve been saying for some time that U.S. support for Ukraine is necessary and a good investment, but in their resistance, Republicans are exploiting another glaring problem, and closer to home. voters, that of immigration at the southern border.
Even before agreeing on the amount demanded by Joe Biden, Republican elected officials demand that any aid granted be conditional on the adoption of a package of measures to curb immigration at the southern border.
Democrats and Republicans, however, agree on the need to act quickly on this issue and Joe Biden has already alienated his progressive wing by extending his predecessor’s measures.
Where is the problem then? The demands of Republican radicals cool the ardor of the most motivated Democrats. Whether it involves detaining children for a long period or increasing the powers of the executive (we are already thinking of the return of Donald Trump), Democrats consider the demands to be inadmissible.
Negotiations in the Senate were therefore at a standstill on Tuesday and the elected representatives of the House of Representatives with a Republican majority will be even more demanding than their colleagues in the upper house.
By investing in disinformation during the 2016 presidential campaign, Vladimir Putin obtained a huge return on his investment with the victory of Donald Trump. I now suspect him of rejoicing in the presence of many radicals in the American Congress. American democracy risks giving him an additional gift by limiting support for Ukraine.
