United States Vice President JD Vance had fun at Canada’s expense Friday afternoon, saying the country’s standard of living was “stagnating” because of all the “foreigners” living in the country.

“Although the causes are undoubtedly complex, no country has sunk so much into a delusional immigration policy based on the principle that “diversity is our strength, we do not need a melting pot, we have a salad bowl” (we don’t need a melting pot, we have a salad bowl),” he wrote.
In this expression, the salad bowl refers to the coexistence of cultures, without direct fusion. The crucible rather corresponds to their assimilation.
“This country has the highest proportion of foreign-born people among the G7 countries, and its standard of living is stagnating,” added Mr. Vance.
In a subsequent publication, Mr. Vance blamed Canadian media coverage of the United States. According to him, President Trump’s tariff policies imposed on Canada have no impact on the standard of living of Canadians.
“With all due respect to my Canadian friends, whose politics are obsessed with the United States: your stagnant standard of living has nothing to do with Donald Trump or the scapegoat that Radio-Canada designates for you. The fault lies with your leaders, whom you yourself elected,” he believes.
Before tabling his budget, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne indicated that he wanted to reduce immigration to “more sustainable” levels in Canada.
The country will aim to welcome just 385,000 temporary residents next year. This is 43% less than the initial 2025 target, set by the previous administration of Justin Trudeau.
