Iran produced 6.6 terawatt-hours of nuclear energy last year, ranking 30th in the world in this field, according to what the Iranian Mehr News Agency reported on Sunday.
The agency noted the Energy Institute’s announcement of a 1% increase in nuclear energy production in Iran in 2023 in its recently published “World Energy Statistical Review Report,” in which it indicated that production reached 6.6 terawatt-hours of nuclear energy this year.
increase production
Iran’s nuclear energy production grew by about 5% in its 13th government currently in power, and it produced 6.4 terawatt-hours of nuclear energy in 2020, which is the last year of the 12th (previous) government.
Iran is among the few countries in the world that generate nuclear energy, and in 2023 only 33 countries in the world – including Iran – produce nuclear electricity.
The total nuclear electricity produced in the world during this year amounted to 2,737 terawatt-hours, and this number increased by 2.2% compared to last year.
Additional centrifugal devices
It is noteworthy that the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency indicated during this month that Iran quickly installed additional centrifuges for uranium enrichment at the Fordow facility, and began installing other devices, which diplomats described as a limited response to a decision of the Agency Council.
Reuters quoted diplomats as saying that Iran responded to the agency’s board of directors’ decision early this month against it by expanding its ability to enrich uranium in two underground enrichment facilities in Fordo and Natanz.
The confidential report sent by the agency to member states explained the steps taken by Iran, and explained that the only concrete steps so far in either of the two underground facilities were taken by Tehran at the Fordow facility dug into the mountain.
The confidential report sent by the IAEA to member states stated: “On June 9 and 10, Iran informed the agency that it would install 8 cascades, each containing 174 IR-6 centrifuges, during the next three or four weeks in the unit.” The first is from the Fordow fuel enrichment plant.
The chains are an interconnected group of centrifuges.
The report said, “On June 11, 2024, the agency verified at the Fordow fuel enrichment plant that Iran had completed the installation of IR-6 centrifuges in two chains in the first unit, and the installation of this type of device was underway in 4 other chains,” indicating To one of the most advanced models of centrifuges in Iran.
