The American association PETA on Tuesday urged carousel manufacturers to stop using animals in their rides, since the latter “unintentionally celebrate exploitation”, according to the animal rights defender.
“Animal-themed carousel sets reinforce the idea that these sentient beings are simply there for our entertainment, rather than individuals with the same capacity to feel fear, pain, joy and love as each other. ‘between us,’ PETA president Ingrid Newkirk reportedly said Tuesday in a letter to one of the country’s largest ride manufacturers, according to the New York Post.
On Tuesday, the non-profit association contacted the ride manufacturer Chances Rides, located in Kansas, to invite it to abandon its animal themes by instead using inanimate objects, such as cars, unicycles, rockets, or still shooting stars, rainbows or witches’ brooms.
Because according to her, the elimination of rides with a theme of animal exploitation would hit hard industries that employ real animals, such as camel rides or dolphin shows, noted the American media in the letter.
These animals are normally held in horrible conditions and are often victims of abuse, the organization reportedly added, calling on Chance Rides, but also all other carousel manufacturers, to “adopt designs that engage children’s imagination and value human talent.
“Children learn through play and teaching them to have respect and compassion for all living and sentient beings can help create a more just and merciful world,” continued the president, in a press release reported by the “NY Post”.
This is not the first time that PETA has tried to gain support from companies that do not physically deal with animals: in 2018, the food company Nabisco reportedly agreed to transform the design of its cookie boxes featuring animals in cages , for free animals in the savannah.
