(Washington) The US Supreme Court authorized the Trump administration on Friday to freeze more than four billion dollars in international aid, however approved by the congress.
The judges of the highest court in the United States considered that the authority of the President in matters of foreign affairs seemed to “prevail over the damage” that could undergo the normally recipient populations of these funds.
The majority of conservative court nevertheless specified that its rendering was not a final decision, and only made it possible to temporarily freeze this money while the case follows its course in the courts of less instance.
Since his return to the White House in January, Donald Trump has blocked billions of dollars intended for international aid and formally dismantled the American Agency for International Development (USAID), now dependent on the State Department, in charge of diplomacy.
The largest humanitarian agency worldwide, USAID was involved in health and emergency aid programs in around 120 countries.
The three liberal judges of the Supreme Court expressed their disagreement on Friday.
Judge Elena Kagan notably denounced a decision “in contradiction with the separation of powers”.
