(Los Angeles) The governor of California announced Wednesday the deployment of the National Guard to distribute food aid, increasingly in demand in recent days due to a prolonged budgetary paralysis in the United States which particularly affects the poorest households.
Hundreds of thousands of federal government employees across the country are not paid due to the “shutdown”, a consequence of the disagreement between the Republican majority of President Donald Trump and the Democratic opponents, who respectively stick to their positions in Congress around the budget vote.
“Trump’s failure is not abstract, he literally takes bread from people’s mouths,” denounced California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, announcing the deployment of the National Guard in this rich western American state.

“Millions of Americans depend on food aid to feed their families,” insisted the man who remains one of the most prominent potential Democratic candidates for the 2028 presidential election.
Aid paid to some of the poorest people in the United States, notably under a food stamp program (Snap), should end in the coming days if no agreement is reached between Republicans and Democrats.
Entering its fourth week, this “shutdown” on Wednesday became the second longest in United States history. At the heart of the debate, a disagreement between Republicans, wishing to extend the current budget, and Democrats, who are demanding an extension of subsidies for health insurance programs for low-income households.
The National Guard is a military reserve force based in each state and typically mobilized to deal with emergencies such as natural disasters.
In recent months, Donald Trump has angered his opponents by sending the National Guard to Democratic cities, against the advice of local authorities, such as Los Angeles and the capital Washington.
Last summer, Gavin Newsom particularly distinguished himself against Donald Trump when he ordered the deployment of the National Guard in California during demonstrations in Los Angeles against the government’s anti-migrant policy.
