The head of the Moroccan National Electricity Regulatory Authority, Abdellatif Berdache, said that his country intends to launch a project to exchange electrical energy with West African countries.
Morocco has completed several studies aimed at examining the possibility of an electrical connection between Morocco and Mauritania, in a broader perspective, which seeks to connect the countries of the Maghreb and the countries of West Africa on the economic and technical level, according to the Moroccan official.
Bardash did not mention any financial or technical details regarding the cost of building interconnection networks between West African countries, or the implementation date.
On November 23, 2022, the Moroccan Royal Court said that Rabat intends to produce 52% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
The Royal Court stated in a statement at the time that the country aims to rise to the club of countries with strong qualifications in the renewable energy sector, and to respond to multiple projects in the field.
On Saturday, the ministers of the African Sahel countries agreed in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh to establish a national working group in each country to prepare and propose ways to activate an international initiative by King Mohammed VI of Morocco on energy, so that the Sahel countries of the Atlantic Ocean can benefit from renewable energy.
Last June, the Moroccan government announced that it would triple its investments in renewable energy, to reach $1.4 billion annually between 2023 and 2027.
