(Washington) The United States has set the number of refugees worldwide that it is prepared to welcome at around 7,500, a historically low number which will mainly concern white South Africans, according to a White House document made public Thursday.
“The admission of 7,500 refugees to the United States during fiscal year 2026 is justified by humanitarian considerations or is in the national interest,” writes President Donald Trump in this document dated September 30 and which must be published Friday in the Federal Register.
“The number of admissions will be mainly distributed between Afrikaners from South Africa (…) and other victims of illegal or unfair discrimination in their respective countries of origin,” he added.
Upon his return to power in January, Donald Trump slashed United States foreign aid and tightened immigration policy by focusing on the expulsion of illegal immigrants and restricting the reception of asylum seekers and other refugees.
The Republican leader also issued a decree on February 7 that claims that Afrikaners, descendants of the first European settlers in South Africa, are being stripped of their land, granting them refugee status.
In May, around fifty of them were welcomed to the United States as refugees, a move vigorously contested by Pretoria.
