Economy, security measures and relationship with Russia: Kamala Harris had to answer several more complex questions on Monday, during her appearance on the popular American show 60 Minutes.

This CBS interview with the Democratic presidential candidate comes in a context of a media campaign which also allows Mme Harris to find himself in front of friendlier interviewers and with a more targeted audience.

Here are five takeaways from this interview:

Act on border security

Kamala Harris said migration was a “long-standing problem”.

Asked about her approach as vice president in Joe Biden’s administration to immigration policies, she declined to answer whether her administration should have cracked down sooner.

“This is a problem that has been going on for a long time. And solutions are within reach. And since day one, literally, we’ve been providing solutions,” Harris said.

No face-to-face with Vladimir Putin

The Democratic candidate explained that she would not meet alone with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a solution to end the war in Ukraine.

“Ukraine must have a say in its future,” she said.

Harris mentioned that “there will be no success in ending this war without the participation of Ukraine and the UN.”

Criticism of Donald Trump

Donald Trump withdrew from his interview 60 Minutes after his campaign team accepted it and scheduled a meeting at his Mar-a-Lago property, according to CBS reports.

Kamala Harris took advantage of the situation to throw an arrow at her opponent.

“If he doesn’t give your viewers the opportunity to have a meaningful, thoughtful conversation – questions and answers with you – then watch his rallies,” Harris opined.

Tim Walz needs to be more careful

Vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz was also received on the American show.

He reported that Mme Harris had encouraged him to choose his words more carefully.

“She said to me, ‘Tim, you know, you need to be a little more careful about how you say things.’ Whatever happens,” Mr. Walz said.

Kamala Harris’ alliance with a Republican?

The interview shows Kamala Harris with Liz Cheney, a former Republican representative.

The latter was ousted during the primary because of her role in the investigation into the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

She also supported Mme Harris at a rally in Wisconsin last week.

Asked if she imagined campaigning alongside Cheney four years ago, Harris responded warmly.

“That would be great,” said M.me Harris.
