An Arkansas man walking in a national park picked up what he thought was a piece of glass, but ultimately turned out to be a 4.87-carat diamond.
Crater of Diamonds National Park, located in Murfreesboro, is known as a place where many gemstones are found on the ground.
When Jerry Evans went there last spring, he saw something that caught his attention.
“I thought it was a piece of glass,” he said. We were picking everything up thinking it might be a diamond.”
Months later, he thought about the object again and finally decided to have it identified.
To his great surprise, he was told that it was a 4.87 carat diamond.
Assistant Park Superintendent Waymond Cox says this is the largest diamond found at the site since 2020.
“Mr. Evans’ diamond is spectacular to see,” he said. It is a complete crystal with a brilliant white color reminiscent of several other large diamonds found here over the years.”
The diamond was named Evans, in honor of the person who found it.
In total, around 800 diamonds were found in this park in 2023 for a total of 125 carats.
