There have been countless truly spectacular reversals in the American presidential election. Republican Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.
After hanging on to the curtains of the Oval Office for too long, incumbent President Joe Biden has finally left the race. His running mate Kamala Harris has quickly taken over.
His Olympian calm, his formidable intellect, his uncompromising defense of minorities and women’s right to abortion – even his laugh – have become major assets in the Democratic campaign.
His choice of Tim Walz as his running mate was even more surprising. A senator of modest means, he is known for his progressive policies focused on strong local communities.
Trump, for his part, chose a certain JD Vance as his running mate. A monumental mistake, which he must surely regret. We never stop digging up the astonishing assertions of this young ultraconservative senator.
He has even mocked women “who have cats and no children” because, according to him, they are incapable of caring for the interests of the country because they have never had children…
Weird…
Donald Trump also found a way to openly doubt the skin color of Kamala Harris, whose father was born in Jamaica and mother in India.
In short, the more time passes, the more the Trump-Vance duo embodies the epithet of weird (weird), which Tim Walz very cleverly adorns him with. The word weird being of course an understatement.
The result: on every level, the contrast between the two duos is striking. On a strategic level, it is not fortuitous either. The multiple attempts to demonize Trump having been in vain, the Democrats now aim to ridicule him on every platform. And it works.
Democrats are finally moving the needle in the polls in their favor. At least, for now. Because who knows what else the next few months will deliver in the unexpected department.
The impossible
In his first speech as vice presidential candidate, Tim Walz thanked Kamala Harris for “bringing joy back” to Democrats.
Certainly, but in reality, the Harris-Walz tandem has above all succeeded in the impossible. That is to say, to breathe a real wind of hope. In the United States and beyond its borders.
The hope is that there is a new possibility of blocking Donald Trump’s path to return to the White House. An ambition that, until recently, seemed on the way to being realized.
Even though victory against Trump is not guaranteed out of the box, because the hope of defeating him now exists, he not only moves the polls, he also fills the coffers of the Democratic Party and mobilizes its base.
Well yes. Seen from this angle, Tim Walz was therefore absolutely right.
This hope even manages to bring a smile back to the faces of voters who, under Joe Biden, were increasingly despairing at the mere thought of a second Trump presidency.
Which proves that, in politics as in life, hope is a powerful fuel.
