Emmanuel Damas, 56, who had requested asylum in the United States, died after developing a dental infection while in detention, his brother Presly Nelson was quoted as saying by ABC.
Mr. Nelson felt that the staff at the establishment had not taken his brother’s complaints seriously.
“I think we can do better than that,” said Mr. Nelson, who is an American citizen.
Emmanuel Damas entered the United States in 2024 under the Temporary Humanitarian Protection (TPS) regime which the Trump administration wishes to revoke.
TPS, established in 1990, prevents authorities from deporting immigrants to countries deemed unsafe, whether due to natural disasters, armed conflict or other crises.
The Trump administration has moved to dismantle most of these programs, raising the specter of deportation over hundreds of thousands of immigrants.
According to American media, Emmanuel Damas is the tenth person to die in an ICE detention center since the start of the year.
