Haaretz newspaper said that the seriousness of the situation cannot be underestimated after the decision of the International Court of Justice, last Friday, in which it asked Israel to take measures to prevent genocide in Gaza.
She added that Israelis should not ignore the court’s approval to verify “allegations” of genocide, and stressed the need for the government, the Knesset (parliament), the president, the army and the citizens of Israel to view the decision as a severe warning that requires compliance with its directives.
As a signatory to the 1948 UN Convention on Genocide, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take “steps to prevent acts of genocide, including preventing irreparable harm to the population of Gaza, including easing the almost complete blockade of humanitarian aid,” but The resolution did not call for a complete cessation of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.
Their statements cost Israel a heavy price
According to the German News Agency, the case filed by South Africa a month ago on behalf of the residents of Gaza put the Court of Justice to the test, asking it to take emergency judicial orders.
Haaretz newspaper considered that the “laxity” of the Israeli government’s judicial advisor, Gali Baharav Meara, and the state’s attorney general, Amit Eisman, in dealing with many inflammatory and dangerous statements issued by the head of state, the prime minister, members of his government, legislators and other public figures, has cost Israel a heavy price.
She pointed out that the petition submitted against Israel included several observations that derived from it, and from the failure of the Israeli judiciary to punish the instigators, the intention of genocide.
According to the newspaper’s editorial, the International Court of Justice cited in its ruling Baharav Mayara’s announcement prior to the hearing of the petition, in which the Attorney General stated that she had begun action against the inflammatory statements of the country’s senior officials.
The instigators among senior leaders must be punished
Haaretz stressed the need to move forward with its action and punish the instigators, describing the court’s decision, citing the statements of President Isaac Herzog, Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Foreign Minister Israel Katz, as extremely important.
It stated that the decision indicates that the court takes these statements seriously, and that it is not prepared to deal with them in the same way as they are dealt with in Israel: that is, considering the statements of Parliament members Nassim and Touri, Tali Gottlief and their like, and turning a blind eye to them, represents a disgrace on their foreheads, considering that they do not Represents Israeli policy.
The newspaper advised the entire Israeli leadership to change the way it expresses itself, “If it does not do so, the government’s judicial advisor must deal firmly with it.”
She stressed that it is important to do everything possible to mitigate the harm to civilians, and to provide conditions for them to live a reasonable life in Gaza, not for fear of The Hague (International Court of Justice), but rather to preserve our humanity in the first place.
