United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres criticized the absence of a permanent seat for the African continent in the UN Security Council, and renewed the call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Guterres stressed in a blog post on his account on the X platform – yesterday, Saturday – the need for international institutions to reflect the world of today, and not the world of 80 years ago, as he put it.

The UN Secretary-General said, “How can we accept that Africa does not have a single permanent member of the Security Council?”

He explained that the future summit that the United Nations intends to hold next September will constitute “an opportunity to consider global governance reforms and rebuild confidence,” as he put it.

Guterres had indicated in previous statements that the Future Summit “will be a unique opportunity to help rebuild confidence and make outdated multilateral institutions and frameworks compatible with today’s world, on the basis of equality and solidarity.”

Guterres renewed his call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and said in another blog post on his account on the X platform, “People in Gaza are dying not only because of bombs and bullets, but because of the lack of food and clean water, and the lack of electricity and medicine in hospitals, and this must stop.”

The Secretary-General of the United Nations affirmed his determination to continue to demand an end to the war in Gaza, and said, “I will not back down from my call for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
