Nok– With the return of US President Donald Trump to the White House at the beginning of this year and the controversy that raised him by declaring his intention to buy Greenland “in one way or another”, this North Arctic Island became a pivotal point in the world’s interest in its geopolitical strategic location and its enormous natural resources, as well as the diplomatic and legal challenges related to any possible acquisition.

On a 10 -day trip in its capital, Nok, Al -Jazeera Net was close to the cost of living in this largest island in the world, with a population of about 56 thousand people, most of whom are concentrated in the southwestern coastal areas.

High prices

Greenland is relatively more expensive than most of the European countries known for its high prices, and these are indications of living standards on this island:

  • The average hotel room price, does not exceed 10 meters, $ 170 per night, so you should plan to spend at least $ 1,000 if you want to stay a week.
  • The cost of one week’s trip to Greenland is usually about 2100 dollars (14 thousand and 700 Danish chrons) per person, including accommodation, food, local transportation and viewing tourist attractions, according to the available budget and travel style.
  • The monthly rent of a single bedroom apartment in the capital, Nok, reaches between 1300 and 2000 dollars, and may vary according to the site and the city.
  • The average cost of food in Nok is about 120 dollars (820 Danish krns) per day per person, based on spending habits and restaurants. In an economic restaurant in the capital, the visitor pays at least $ 25 for a meal consisting of a main and drink.

The absence of agriculture

Greenland covers an ice layer covering about 80% of it, and it is ranked as the second largest ice block in the world after Antarctica, and the climate of the island ranges between the northern poles in the north and the semi -polarity in the south.

The difficult climatic factors, harassment, mountains and ice rivers lead to the lack of agriculture on the island, which means the necessity of importing all types of fruits and vegetables from abroad, and all lands in Greenland are owned by the state, and there is no right to ownership of their own.

There is a clear rapprochement between the products of Denmark and Greenland so that the names of the stores and their internal engineering are very similar, according to what appeared in the Al -Jazeera Net tour.

As for fruits and vegetables, they are imported from all over the world, including India and some African countries. For example, the price of a kilo of kilo of potatoes is about 7 dollars, and one kilo of apples at least $ 3.

It is worth noting that the high temperatures in recent years allowed to improve the production of some crops and increase the ability to produce grass as feed for livestock, which contributed to the introduction of livestock as a kind of livestock producing meat, but this most often faces drought and severe weather fluctuations.

hunting

Greenland relies on the emerging tourism sector, wild fishing and fishing that is the backbone of the economy. Traditional fishing practices, including whales and seals, are still ongoing within local communities.

According to the data of the Greenland Statistics Authority, the annual fish exports in 2023 amounted to about 5.3 billion Danish krns (806 million dollars), equivalent to 23% of the island’s gross domestic product.

On the other hand, government spending reached 9.6 billion Danish krns (1.46 billion dollars), equivalent to 42% of the gross domestic product. For this reason, Greenland still needs funding through the annual grant of the Danish government, which amounted to about 20% of the gross domestic product of this island.

More than 4,300 people work directly in the fishing or industries and trade -related industries, and this represents about 15% of the country’s total employment.
