“President Trump and his legal team in Georgia have prevailed once again,” Steve Sadow, Trump’s lawyer, said in a statement obtained by CNN. He called the announcement welcome news.
Judge Scott McAfee dismissed one count of creating false documents and another of conspiracy to file false documents. The Republican candidate was named only in the conspiracy count.
He was also accused of producing false documents for the occasion.
The ruling has not been formally applied to Mr. Trump, as his trial has been put on hold pending appeals. He and the other defendants are seeking to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The prosecution is therefore on hold for a specified period.
This is not the first time that the judge has dismissed charges; he had already dismissed some last March.
Four of the 19 people initially charged in the case have pleaded guilty, according to AFP. They managed to obtain reduced prison sentences for having testified at the trial of the other defendants.
Mr. Willis’ office declined to comment on CNN’s comments, and McAfee’s office has not yet responded.
