(Washington) The former head of American diplomacy under Joe Biden, Antony Blinken, expressed his support for the peace plan for Gaza by President Donald Trump, saying that he would be implemented, while evoking possible “flaws”.
“I think it gives rise to a certain hope. I sincerely hope that this plan will be fully accepted, adopted and implemented, “said Blinken in a broom by the former federal prosecutor Preet Bharara broadcast on Thursday.
“This is essentially the plan that we have developed in many months and that we have more or less left in a drawer for the new administration,” he added.
Unveiled Monday by Mr. Trump alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, the plan provides a cease-fire, the release within 72 hours of the hostages selected in Gaza, the disarmament of the Palestinian movement, a progressive Israeli withdrawal of the territory and the establishment of a transitional authority overseen by the American president.
Hamas said they examined this plan, reserving its response.
But the former secretary of state has also recognized the risks inherent in this framework, in particular the fact of letting Israel determine when the situation will allow him to completely withdraw from the Gaza Strip.
“There are flaws they could enjoy if they wanted,” said Blinken about Israel.
Antony Blinken went a dozen times to the Middle East after the attack on October 7, 2023 against Israel by Hamas, trying to put the two parties to accept a cease-fire.
Israel and Hamas finally accepted a cease-fire on January 19, on the last day of President Biden’s mandate, with the support of Trump’s new special envoy Steve Witkoff.
But in March, Israel resumed its major military operations in Gaza and blocked any food entry, leading to a disastrous humanitarian situation that led the United Nations to declare famine in certain parts of the devastated Gaza Strip.
