“The Nottingham Panthers regret to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following an accident during the match in Sheffield last night,” the English Premier League club wrote in a statement on Sunday. “Adam, our number 47, was not only an exceptional ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him.”
All Sunday matches postponed
The American, former player of the Pittsburgh Penguins (13 games between 2018 and 2020) in particular, would have suffered a cut on the neck from a skate blade during the cup match between Nottingham and Sheffield on Saturday. According to the Daily Mail, 8,000 people were present on Saturday evening at the time of the fatal attack.
The BBC reports that Johnson was taken to a local hospital in Sheffield. The game was suspended at 13:47 of the second period and did not resume. The English Hockey League has decided to postpone all matches scheduled for Sunday.
