The fire broke out early in the morning on the top floor of a building which has six floors, in the Upper West Side district.
A large number of firefighters went to the scene to put an end to it and the streets in the area were closed to traffic.
“Our units arrived on scene in just over three minutes. This is an extremely impressive response time,” said operations manager Kevin Woods during an on-site press briefing.
He said the two occupants of the building who were injured were one on the roof, the other on the third floor. All other residents had left the area after the fire broke out. The causes of the incident are currently unknown.
The evacuated people were taken care of by emergency services in buses made available to them by the city’s transport authority. In New York, the thermometer showed -8 degrees at the start of the morning.
