A young 20-year-old skier is believed to have lost her life on Mount Washington in the United States after skidding on a vertical slope of the mountain, in weather conditions which had already forced the rescue of three other skiers the day before.
“Snow rangers and emergency personnel were up there late last night,” Colleen Mainville, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman, told NBC affiliate WBTS-TV News on Sunday, according to the “New York Post”.
Stormy and icy conditions that forced emergency services to stage a rescue operation Saturday night did not stop skiers from jumping onto the slopes of Mount Washington, New Hampshire, on Sunday.
It is in this context that the young Madison Saltsburg, 20 years old, would have lost her life after having slipped on the southeast face of the imposing peak, Tuckerman Ravine, falling approximately 183 meters, reported the TV channel.
The mountain, which is the highest in the northeast of the United States, would be particularly popular with skiers who go off-piste, despite rapid and unpredictable weather changes which would regularly force rescuers to intervene, according to the American media.
The day before, three skiers, including two injured, found themselves caught on the mountain in violent winds and a major snowstorm, forcing teams to battle the conditions to carry out the rescue operation.
In total, a foot of snow was forecast, according to the “NY Post”
