(Washington) Donald Trump mistook a falcon cut down by a wind turbine for the eagle which is the national emblem of the United States, sharing a photo Tuesday on his Truth Social platform with the aim of questioning wind energy, one of his pet peeves.

On the photo in question lies a bird of prey at the foot of wind turbines. “Wind turbines are killing all our beautiful eagles! », the American president says in the caption.

But the photo was taken years ago in Israel and does not show a “Bald eagle”, America’s symbol bird.

According to an AFP investigation, the photo was published in 2017 by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, which identified a falcon and attributed the photo to the Israeli natural parks management service. Hebrew characters are also visible on the trunk of the wind turbine.

Several elected officials, Democrats and Republicans, criticized the sharing of the photo, including California Governor Gavin Newsom. “Doesn’t Sleeping Don know how to recognize the emblem of America? “, asked the Democrat on social networks.

The eagle is represented on stamps, currency, and even American military insignia.

It is recognizable by its white head and large size, and is a common species in North America.

The bird shared by Donald Trump is smaller and dark in color.

Every year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of birds die from wind turbines, according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The university, however, clarified in 2023 that these deaths “represent only a tiny part of the birds killed by other causes, such as collisions with buildings, or attacks by domestic cats”.
