US authorities have called on citizens to exercise extreme caution when considering cosmetic treatment, after two clients of an unlicensed Botox nurse had to be hospitalized in Illinois.

“Receiving these treatments in unlicensed and unapproved settings can put you or your loved ones at serious risk of health problems,” Dr. Sameer Vohra, state public health director, said Monday. press release, according to NBC News.
Warnings about medical procedures being performed at unregulated medical spas are reportedly growing across the country as more citizens turn to clinics offering these services without the necessary training, the US media reported.
This time, it was the state of Illinois which sounded the alert, after two patients were hospitalized following Botox injections “or a possibly counterfeit version of the product”, offered by a nurse “who carried out work outside her authority”, the Ministry of Public Health reportedly indicated in writing.
Both patients had to be rushed to hospital after experiencing symptoms similar to botulism, an illness caused by toxins produced by several bacteria, including Clostridium botulinum.
The latter is used in particular to relax the facial muscles which would cause wrinkles, but in too large a quantity and in the wrong place, it can become damaging, the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reportedly noted, according to NBC News.
Among the symptoms, the two Illinois residents would have noted “blurred/double vision, drooping face, fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, hoarse voice,” said the American media.
