(Washington) The administration of US President Donald Trump announced on Friday the final revocation of the temporary protection status granted under the Democrat Joe Biden to some 520,000 Haitians in the United States, which will be expelled in September.

Posted at 5:34 p.m.

His interior security secretary, Kristi Noem “has reached the conclusion that, on the whole, the conditions in the country have improved sufficiently for Haitians to go home in safety,” according to a statement from his services.

American diplomacy warns its fellow citizens against any trip to Haiti due to the risks of “kidnapping, crime, civil disorders and the lack of health services”.

But President Donald Trump erected the fight against illegal immigration in absolute priority, evoking an “invasion” of the United States by “criminals from abroad” and communicating abundantly on the expulsions of immigrants.

His government has thus permanently revoked the “temporary protection status” (TPS) granted to these 520,000 Haitians, as it has already done for around 350,000 Venezuelans and around 11,000 Afghans.

The TPS, which protects its beneficiaries from expulsion and gives them the right to work, is temporarily granted to immigrants whose security is threatened in their country due to conflicts, natural disasters or other “extraordinary” conditions.

In February, the Department of Internal Security had already announced to cancel an extension of 18 months of the TPS for Haitians, until February 2026. Consequently, this status was expired on August 3, 2025.

The department confirms in a press release Friday this final expiration date of the TPS for Haitians, specifying that it will be effective on September 2 “.

“Allowing Haitian citizens to stay temporarily in the United States was contrary to national interest,” added Kristi Noem, without any other explanation.

Haiti, the poorest country of the Americas, was kneeling by violent gangs accused of murders, rapes and abductions.

Against the background of chronic political instability, a record number of nearly 1.3 million people were moved to the country by gang violence, the UN said on June 11.

At least 2680 people were killed in gang violence in Haiti from January to May, according to the United Nations.
