A 24-year-old California woman who had been missing since August 26 was reportedly found skin and bones on Friday after spending 12 days in dangerous terrain in Nevada.

“Severely dehydrated and emaciated,” Esmeralda Marie Pineda was reportedly rescued Friday from the top of a canyon near the Yuba River north of Sacramento, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) said Saturday, according to ABC News.

In late August, police issued an appeal to the public in the hope of finding the young woman, who was considered “at risk”, after she apparently ventured into a “dangerous” area of the canyon, requiring the help of qualified search and rescue volunteers, it can be read.

For 12 days, they would have descended into the canyon, combing the area to try to find her trace, after she was last seen at a mining camp in the area, according to the American media.

It was not immediately clear whether the woman was in the area hiking, but when she disappeared, the woman was wearing a black sweatshirt, floral leggings, tennis shoes and a Swiss backpack.

“The sheriff’s office and our search and rescue volunteers have gone a long way throughout our search, and we are grateful today to find her alive,” NCSO Sergeant Dustin Moe said, according to ABC News.

When she was discovered, the young woman from California required immediate medical attention, so much so that she was immediately airlifted to a hospital. Apart from her dehydration and significant emaciation, her condition has not been specified by the authorities.
