Vance Boelter was arrested on Sunday evening, after almost two days of intensive research throughout the Minneapolis.

Hennepin County prosecutor Mary Moriarty said at a press conference on Monday that she was planning to charge Mr. Boelter for first degree murder. The maximum sentence incurred in the event of a condemnation for first -degree murder is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in Minnesota, which does not apply the death penalty.

The authorities initially charged him with second degree murder and attempted murder, the most serious charges that can be retained in the context of a criminal complaint when there are probable reasons to think that a crime has been committed.

Mr. Boelter is accused of pretending to be a police officer and of having shot down the former Democratic president of the House of Representatives, Melissa Hortman, and her husband, Mark, at their home, early Saturday, in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis.

The authorities claim that he also shot the Democratic senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. They were injured at their homes located about 15 kilometers away.

“The unthinkable acts of a man have changed the state of Minnesota,” said Democratic Governor Tim Walz at a press conference after Boelter’s arrest.

More details will follow.
