This civil trial pits a former columnist for the American edition of Elle magazine, E. Jean Carroll, 80, against Donald Trump, 77, whom she has already ordered to pay five million dollars in damages in 2023. for sexual assault in 1996 and, for the first time, for defamation.

Commuting in January between his campaign meetings and the Manhattan courthouse, the former tenant of the White House and ultra-favorite in the Republican primaries returned to court Monday morning to testify and defend himself, before the judge postpones the hearing due to a juror showing symptoms of Covid-19.

The hearing was postponed to Wednesday then again to Thursday 9:30 a.m., we learned from the New York federal prosecutor’s office.

Mr. Trump’s possible testimony will therefore come two days after the Republican primaries in New Hampshire on Tuesday, which could see the former president take a giant step towards his party’s nomination against Nikki Haley, although he be charged in four criminal cases.

In the civil case against E. Jean Carroll, despite a resounding first unanimous verdict in May by a popular jury, Donald Trump continued to denigrate and insult the writer, whom he described as “crazy” , to the “phony story”, which he has “never seen in (his) life”.

This second trial began on January 16, which is not an appeal hearing, stems from a defamation complaint from E. Jean Carroll for statements by Donald Trump in June 2019, when she first accused him of rape in a book.

Then President of the United States, he claimed that the woman who was “not his type” had invented everything to “sell a new book”. The procedure had been delayed, but this second trial was maintained.

The plaintiff claims more than ten million dollars for moral and professional damage.
