The Democrats took advantage of the weakening of the Republican campaign to build up support among voters disappointed by Donald Trump.
This Republican weariness was evident on the second day of the Democratic convention, where Stephanie Grisham, Donald Trump’s former press secretary, and Kyle Sweetser, a former pro-Trump voter, were invited to give speeches.
“For the past month, (high-ranking Republicans) have all been telling me that unfortunately, Trump is working very hard to lose (the campaign),” illustrated Louise Blais, diplomat in residence and professor at the Graduate School of International Studies at Laval University.
The effect of Kamala Harris’ arrival in the race for the White House has completely changed the pace of the election, added Benjamin Bélair, Quebec’s delegate in Washington.
“We have to take the measure of the change over the last month. I attended the Republican convention and at the end, the analysts were predicting a resounding victory for Donald Trump,” he illustrated.
Many pro-Trump activists felt confused by the change of direction in the presidential election.
“For them, victory was going to be easy, with a weakened Biden candidate. There is a kind of incomprehension about the situation. It is seen every day in the Trump campaign,” he added.
Voters have accused former President Donald Trump of lacking discipline in recent weeks. His abrasive style, which leads him to attack and insult his opponents, no longer seems to be working against Kamala Harris.
“It was one thing to attack the president he was running against. Kamala Harris has managed to turn the tables. She doesn’t really have a past that’s easy to attack. So he’s stuck with very superficial things. For the moment, it falls a little flat,” said Louise Blais.
“The Republican campaign has been completely disorganized for several weeks,” said Mr. Bélair.
Doubts about his running mate
According to Louise Blais, internal sources have confirmed that Donald Trump regretted choosing JD Vance as his running mate.
“It’s a choice that was made a little too quickly, that was not thought through. (This decision was made assuming) that they had in front of them a President Biden who was running his own campaign,” she said.
However, the die has not yet been cast for the November 5 vote.
“We are not immune to other surprises in this campaign. For the moment, Democratic strategists are enthusiastic. The activists are galvanized, but we are keeping a little embarrassment for the future,” Mr. Bélair stressed.
