The flood of lies, misogynistic, racist or homophobic comments heard during Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden hardly surprised me.
Was it, however, a gathering similar to that of the Nazis in the same place in 1939?
There were representatives of the far right, sometimes on stage, but there were mainly people who had the impression that they were being listened to, regardless of the words used to evoke their fear and pain.
Even if Donald Trump were to be defeated next Tuesday, the challenge that would then await the American political class would be titanic.
The future of the Republican Party
For nine years, the Republican Party has sacrificed all its principles to surrender hand and foot to Donald Trump. To deny everything on the altar of the victory of 2016 was costly.
Already, Trump and his people have had poor performances in 2018, 2020 and 2022. The angry speeches that divided the nation were not enough to win majorities and had the effect of turning everyone on their heads.
The GOP is no longer a great party of ideas, it is content to be a vehicle for anger, frustrations and base instincts. It needs to come out of the sewers to offer a real project that disappointed Republicans or right-wing Democrats could support.
To win on a consistent basis, you have to build a coalition. The party must distance itself from this far-right movement which is plaguing it.
Democrats need to reconnect
Whether it wins or loses, the Democratic Party will have to answer this question: how can we explain that it struggles to inspire confidence in the face of an angry, incompetent and crazy individual?
Among the first actions to take, he will have to distance himself from the most absurd demands of his most progressive wing.
This party must stop alienating those who are afraid. It is legitimate to be concerned about the flow of immigrants, more specifically these illegal migrants who cross the border in too large numbers.
We can give them a course in international law or American geopolitics, they won’t sleep any better. Let us stop looking down on them.
Kamala Harris enlisted the services of Tim Walz in hopes of speaking more directly to rural Americans. It is abnormal that these millions of citizens, often forgotten, no longer find themselves in a party whose platform should nevertheless appeal to them.
The Democrats have little or no dialogue with millions of Americans and thus push them towards a party that exploits their anger. They lost the vote of many Spanish speakers and made representatives of the black community doubtful.
If she wins, Kamala Harris will have to offer more than a parade of stars who line up behind her vague promises. The country must unite and pull itself together, that is the most important issue.
