The 84% Chinese customs duties entered the American products today, Thursday, which represents a new stage in the trade war launched by Washington and increases fears of global recession.

The new customs duties will be applied to all American products that enter China, which amounted to about $ 143.5 billion in 2024, according to the US Trade Representative Office.

Beijing also added 6 American companies to the list of unreliable entities, and put 12 American entities on the export monitoring list.

China filed a lawsuit against the United States – to the mechanism of settlement of the World Trade Dispute – for the recent increase in customs tariffs.

The move comes after US President Donald Trump revealed on Wednesday a new plan to increase fees on Chinese imports to 125%, while the fees imposed on some other countries were temporarily suspended.

Chinese response … fighting to the end

China has pledged to take counter measures, following the United States increasing its customs duties on Chinese goods to 125%, but urged dialogue to settle mutual files and stabilize relations between the two countries.

The Chinese Minister of Trade said that what is called American counter -fees is a serious violation of the legitimate interests of all countries, and added that his country wants to resolve differences through consultation and negotiations, but if the American side has passed on its way, China will fight for the end, according to Reuters.

“I want to confirm that there is no winner in a commercial war, and China does not want a commercial war. But the government will not stand idle in any way when it is damaged and violated by the legitimate rights and interests of its people.”

The Chinese official added that the United States’ use of customs definitions as a weapon to exercise the maximum pressure and the pursuit of its own interests is a typical work of unilateral, fever and economic bullying, according to the official Xinhua agency.

He pointed out that his country is ready to communicate with the American side on the main bilateral economic and commercial issues, and to address the interests of each of them through dialogue and consultations on an equal footing.

“If the United States is determined to launch a tariff war or a commercial war, China is ready to fight to the end,” Lin Jian, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, said during a press conference yesterday.

Impacts on the global economy

The Director General of the World Trade Organization, Nguzi Okondo Iyalla yesterday, warned that the trade war between the United States and China could reduce “80%” commodity trade between the two largest economies in the world and erase “about 7%” of the long -term global GDP.

“Our initial expectations indicate that the exchange of goods between these two economies (the United States and China) can decline to 80%” due to commercial tensions, noting “a division of the global economy into two blocs” that may lead – in case of its occurrence – to reduce the global GDP of approximately 7% in the long run.

She pointed out that the United States and China together represent 3% of global trade, and warned that the conflict may “cause severe damage to global economic expectations.”

Numbers on the volume of trade between China and America

The US Trade Representation Office (USTR) data indicates that the volume of trade exchange in goods with China in 2024 amounted to about 582.4 billion dollars, distributed as follows:

  • US exports to China: 143.5 billion dollars, a decrease of 2.9% compared to 2023.
  • American imports from China: $ 438.9 billion, an increase of 2.8% over the previous year.
  • The commercial deficit in the interest of China: $ 295.4 billion, and represents a 5.8% increase from 2023.
