Two people have been arrested after seven students at an elementary school in the US state of Virginia fell ill after eating gummy bears laced with fentanyl.

Clifford Dugan, 50, and Nicole Sanders, 26, face charges of contributing to delinquency and child abuse after a group of youths needed medical help Tuesday.

“During the investigation, it was determined that the children had eaten the gummy bears. Tests revealed that they contained traces of fentanyl,” police informed.

One of the seven students brought the bag of candy from home and shared it with his friends at dinner time.

They were taken to hospital. Two of them had to be transported by ambulance, said a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

All of the young people experienced episodes of nausea, vomiting, headaches and muscle spasms.

The school said the children were released from the hospital late Tuesday evening.
