The head of the Suez Canal Authority, Lieutenant -General Osama Rabie, said on Wednesday that the Red Sea crisis did not lead to a sustainable, alternative road for the Suez Canal, and that the indicators are positive towards the start of the return of stability to the region.
The importance of the channel
The team, Rabie, stated that the Red Sea crisis “proved the importance of the Suez Canal for the sustainability and stability of global supply chains.”
The Yemeni Houthi group attacked – since November 2023 – ships in the Red Sea were heading to Israel, which said it was a support to the Gaza Strip during Israel launched its war on it, which led to a disturbance in the global navigation passages and forcing companies to convert the path of its ships to the Ras Al -Saleh Road The longest around Africa.
“Taking many navigation lines of the Ras Al -Saleh Ras Road led to a high shipping costs and increased operational costs and marine insurance values, as well as the result of the increase in the duration of flights from increased fuel consumption and the high level of carbon emissions harmful to the marine environment,” Rabie added in statements in Cairo.
In December, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El -Sisi said that the disturbance of navigation corridors cost Cairo about 7 billion dollars after the revenue of the Suez Canal fell in 2024.
Al -Sisi explained that this represents a decrease of more than 60% from the channel’s revenues a year ago.

Stability indicators
It is noteworthy that Rabie told AP Muller Merck shipping that there are indications of stability to return to the Red Sea, and urged them to take this into consideration when setting plans and navigational tables.
He called on the head of the Suez Canal Authority to take into account “the positive indicators that the Red Sea region is witnessing during the development of navigation plans and tables during the coming period.”
Merck said last month that it will continue to convert ships away from the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, and the behavior of the Ras Al -Raya Road, despite the Houthis declaring limiting their attacks on ships.
